How NAPLAN Scoring Works and What the Results Really Mean

NAPLAN is an Australian online assessment test called the National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy for students in years 3, 5, 7, and 9. This test focuses on assessing the students’ academic progress and school performance in reading, writing, conventions of language, and numeracy.

The higher the difficulty number, the more difficult the item is. By doing so, for each student, the results are based on both the number and difficulty of the questions the student answered correctly. 

Thus, a student who completes a more complex set of questions is more likely to achieve a higher score. A student who answers the same number of questions correctly but follows a less complex pathway will achieve a lower score.

How to Read NAPLAN Results Step by Step

Step 1: You need to start with the test areas. Each area is reported separately on the ISR’s proficiency scale, so your kid might do well in one area and need support in another. 

Step 2: The most important aspect to look for in an NAPLAN report is the proficiency level. In the report, the black dot on the proficiency scale represents your kid’s performance.

Step 3: The next aspect to look for in an NAPLAN report is the national average. It will be shown as a black triangle that indicates your kid’s achievement against the national average. 

Step 4: Take a look at the skill descriptions to know what students at that level typically know and can do. These descriptions are more helpful than the score alone.

So far, the NAPLAN results explained how your kids performed on their own. But these results also allow you to compare your kids’ scores with the national-level average. Additionally, the report provides a range of achievements for the middle 60% of students in their year level using a light shaded rectangle.

The NAPLAN results in the SSSR format allow the schools to know their school’s average or how they are performing as a group. The Student and School Summary Report (SSSR) will provide feedback on how students within a school performed and help the school staff to identify areas of strength and areas for development for students.

This comparison is possible because the NAPLAN results use a common scale across year levels that ensures fairness and comparability over the years. However, keep in mind, you can’t compare year results prior to 2022 to those from 2023 onwards, as the scales were reset.
