Nov 2, 2025
link

NAPLAN, also called the National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy, is an exam that tests the basic literacy skills of children, which they would need to succeed in life.

It’s taken by almost every child here in Australia and is divided into 4 years. Year 3, 5, 7, and 9. The Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority (ACARA) says that NAPLAN results show how well each student is doing and help teachers plan their lessons for the future.

This is why we have decided to make this comprehensive guide for NAPLAN Year 5 Preparation, and to help them ace it.

NAPLAN Year 5 Curriculum Overview

First, let us understand the Year 5 NAPLAN curriculum, as that is practically the first step to take before you learn how to prepare for NAPLAN Year 5. There are four main parts to the NAPLAN Year 5 test:

parallel
  • Writing: A writing assignment that tests a student’s ability to write a story or a persuasive piece based on a prompt.
  • Reading: Determines how well the Year 5 students have progressed in terms of reading.
  • Conventions of Language: This part tests students’ knowledge of English grammar, punctuation, and spelling by making them employ the rules.
  • Numeracy: This part talks about basic math, geometry, measuring, and how to solve problems.

Each part checks not only how well you remember material but also how well you use your talents. The NAPLAN Year 5 exam is a vital way to see how well students are doing in primary school. It is a test that comes before the more difficult subject that students would learn in secondary school.

How to Prepare for NAPLAN Year 5

Now, let’s address the biggest issue that has been bothering you ever since you started reading. How to prepare for this? You want your child to score well in this, as this test opens a lot of opportunities for them in the future. NAPLAN gives your child’s scores a grade based on bands. Band 1 is the lowest, and Band 10 is the highest. If your child is in Grade 5 and gets a Band 4, they are only meeting the minimum national standard (usually below a “C” grade). Bands 5–7 are the average and what most students get (usually a “C” to “B” grade in schools), and Bands 8 and higher are above average (usually an “A” grade).

To do well on NAPLAN Online Grade 5, your child needs to do two main things. Here they are:

parallel

Become familiar with the online platform

NAPLAN has an online platform for people to check out. Make your child sit on a computer and access it; this will make them familiar with the actual platform and reduce anxiety when taking the real test.

Prepare for the test

The best way to prepare for the test is by solving previous year papers. The website itself has the previous year’s papers that you can use to access those papers. Remember, practice makes a man perfect.

Benefits of Early Preparation – NAPLAN

It’s best that your child start preparing early for this exam. Early preparation means they have less pressure on the actual exam date, and they can manage their time a lot better during tests. To put it simply, the earlier the preparation starts, the better. This will actually allow them to boost their Year 5 literacy and numeracy skills.
