Action Verb
A verb is words that shows what someone or somethings is doing.
Example: “A student talks to her friend every day.”
Here “talks” is the verb because it shows what the student does.
There are three types of clauses:
- Action verbs
- Linking verbs
- Helping verbs
Action Verb
An action verb is a word that shows action.
It tells what the subject of the sentence does.
Example:
- A student talks to her friend everyday.
Here “student” is a subject. here the subject “talks”. So “talks” is an action verb.
Some action verbs show actions that happens mostly in the mind.
Examples:
- Like, Think, Enjoy
Formation of verb sentences:
Sub+ Action verb+ rest of the sentence
Sub+ Helping verb+ Action verb+ Rest of the sentence
Action verbs are divided into two types.
- Transitive verb
- Intransitive verb
Transitive verb:
It must have a direct object.
A transitive verb shows up something/someone to be acted upon.
Examples:
- My father took me to the office for my birthday.
Intransitive verb:
Intransitive verbs do not need a direct object.
They may be preceded by an adjective, adverb, preposition, or another part of speech.
Example:
- My dog barked at the mail carrier.
- The children whispered instead of sleeping.
A verb can often be transitive and intransitive , depending on how it is used in a sentence.
Examples:
- “Sana usually leaves the books on the table.”
- “The train sometimes leaves early on Sunday.”
