Adjectives and Adverbs

Adjectives 

An Adjective is a word that describes a noun or a pronoun. 

• Barbara is wearing a blue frock. 

Here, ‘blue’ is an adjective as it describes the noun ‘frock’ by telling ‘what kind of frock is it? / What color of frock it is? (Here it is blue) 

• Jason has a big house. 

Here, ‘big’ is an adjective as it describes the noun ‘house’ by telling what kind of house is it? (Here it is big) 

Different Types of Adjectives 

Adjective of Quality 

It is used to describe the noun or a pronoun. 

• The tired, old man 
• The mischievous boy 
• The spicey meatball 
• Miss Smith is a great teacher. 
• Jacksonville is a large city. 
• This is a fake story. No one knows the true story. 

 Adjective of Number 

It tells us about number of nouns or their position or place in order.  

• Neil Armstrong was the first man on the moon. 
• James has three dogs. 
• You should eat at least one apple a day. 
• Jessica scored hundred marks in the test. 

Adverbs 

They are words that tell you more details about verbs, adjectives or other adverbs. 

Subject + main verb + adverb 

• Amy dances beautifully (Here the adverb ‘beautifully’ gives more information about the verb ‘dances’) 
• Alex is extremely clever (Here the adverb ‘extremely’ gives more information about the adjective ‘clever’) 
• This bike goes really fast (Here the adverb ‘incredibly’ gives more information about the adverb ‘fast’)  

More Examples 

• Sometimes adverbs and adverb phrases describe the way we do things.  
• They answer the question “How?” 
• Jim played fantastically in the match.  
• Susan was driving carelessly. 
• But Linda always drives safely. 
• Abu can sing beautifully. 

Note: There are different types of adjectives and adverbs. Here, we are only adhering to the rules applicable for the most common type.
