Adverbs and Types of Adverbs

  • Adverbs describe verbs. They modify adjectives and other adverbs. Adverbs, unlike adjectives, do not modify nouns.  
  • Adverbs can also modify clauses, phrases, and sentences.  
  • Adverbs answer one of the questions: When? Where? Why? How? Under what conditions? And to what extent?  

Examples:  

  1. Bill did not run badly.  
  1. He drove slowly.  
  1. The race finished too quickly.  

Types of Adverbs 

  1. Adverbs of Time  
  1. Adverbs of Place  
  1. Adverbs of Manner  
  1. Adverbs of Frequency  
  1. Adverbs of Degree  

1. Adverb of Time:

Shows us the time of the action. 

Examples: 

  1. I’m going to the movies tomorrow.  
  1. We are eating now.  

2. Adverb of Place:

Shows the place where the action takes place.  

Examples:

  1. Today I lost my pen somewhere.  
  1. We were walking north.  

3. Adverbs of Manner:

Tell us how an action happens or is done.  

  1. The children are playing happily.  
  1. He walks slowly.  

4. Adverb of Degree:

Shows the degree of the action of its verb.  

Examples:  

  1. It is somewhat hot here.  
  1. He completely changed my career.  

5. Adverb of Number/Frequency:

Shows how often or how many times an action takes place.  

Examples:

  1. He is often late for work.  
  1. I occasionally eat junk food.
