Alliterations: Uses and Examples

What is an Alliteration? 

Syllables with the same sound stressed or sound group repeating at the beginning of two or more words. 

Examples: 

Fred’s friends fried Fritos for Friday’s food. 

Hannah’s home has heat, hopefully. 

Alex’s aunt ate apples and acorns around August.

Alliterations do not always have to start with the same letter. 

It should have the same sound! 

The phonic ‘ph’ can sound like ‘f.’

Where is Alliteration used? 

Phrases: 

Examples: 

Home sweet home 

Busy as a bee 

Good as gold 

Poems: 

Makes poems more interesting and accentuates the rhythm. 

Examples: 

Sleek seals 

Dipping diving 

Strolling slowly 

Consonance: 

Internal repetition or ending consonant sounds in a section of words. 

What is a constant? 

A pronouncing sound that is not a vowel (a, e, i, o, u) 

Examples of consonance: 

The lumpy, bumpy road 

The string was strong 

Some mammals are clammy.  

Assonance: 

Internal repetition of a vowel sounds in words close together. 

What is a vowel? 

A, E, I, O, U 

Examples of assonance: 

I made my way to the lake 

The hat man 

I don’t know what’s going on!
