Dialogue writing
What is a dialogue?
Dialogue is a conversation between two or more characters.
When you are a dialogue, you are stating a person’s exact words.
It works to tell you more about the character and how they converse with others or react.
Purpose:
If you want to write a story, play, or drama dialogues are very important.
Writing a good dialogue articulates rules to follow, as a bad dialogue can impact the story, play, or drama and the dialogue’s meaning also. Dialogue writing is an essential skill of English writing.
Rules to write a dialogue:
- When writing dialogue, start a new paragraph each time the person speaking changes.
Example:
“Sorry, we’re late!” apologized Annie as she and Matha hurried towards Jill.
“Hey, come here. You all!” called Jill to her friends as they got out of the car.
- The speaker’s word should be set apart from the rest of the sentence with quotation marks (“ ”).
Example:
“How do you do?” asked Ellen.
- Begin the first word of the spoken part with a capital letter. Place end punctuation inside the quotation marks.
Example:
“Look at that!” exclaimed Peter.
- A comma separates the speaker from the spoken words.
Example:
The doctor stated, “I think you will feel better soon.”
