What is a dialogue? 

Dialogue is a conversation between two or more characters.  

When you are a dialogue, you are stating a person’s exact words. 

It works to tell you more about the character and how they converse with others or react. 

Purpose: 

If you want to write a story, play, or drama dialogues are very important.  

Writing a good dialogue articulates rules to follow, as a bad dialogue can impact the story, play, or drama and the dialogue’s meaning also. Dialogue writing is an essential skill of English writing.

Rules to write a dialogue: 

  1. When writing dialogue, start a new paragraph each time the person speaking changes. 

Example: 

Sorry, we’re late!” apologized Annie as she and Matha hurried towards Jill. 

“Hey, come here. You all!” called Jill to her friends as they got out of the car. 

  1. The speaker’s word should be set apart from the rest of the sentence with quotation marks (“ ”). 

Example: 

“How do you do?” asked Ellen.

  1. Begin the first word of the spoken part with a capital letter. Place end punctuation inside the quotation marks. 

Example: 

“Look at that!” exclaimed Peter. 

  1. A comma separates the speaker from the spoken words. 

Example: 

The doctor stated, “I think you will feel better soon.”
