Domain Specific Vocabulary 

What Is Domain-Specific Vocabulary? 

It is the language that is used specifically within one area of knowledge but not others. 

Examples of ‘domains’ of knowledge include 

  • Subjects 
  • Literature 
  • Medicine  
  • History 
  • Chemistry  

The domain-specific vocabulary is utilized by people in chemistry includes terms like ‘molar ratios’, ‘compound’, ‘element’ and ‘substance’.  

These terms have specific terminologies to chemists and may not be comprehended by non chemists. 

Domain specific language is a mark of inclusion with a community of practice. Individuals who are alright with the talk of a specific area and can banter utilizing that language can have more itemized, nuanced and top to bottom discussions than untouchables.
