Figures of Speech 

A figure of speech is a word that is utilized in a non-literal way to create an effect.  

This impact may be explanatory as within the deliberate arrangement of words to realize product expressive, or symbolism as within the utilize of dialect to recommend a visual picture or make an thought more pictorial. 

It is a way of saying something other than the ordinary way. 

Literary devices are said to be the techniques used to help the authors and poets to achieve his or her purpose. It is also called figurative language. 

  • Alliteration describes a series of words in quick succession that all start with the same letter or sound. 
  • A simile is comparison using like, as, or resembles. 
  • A metaphor is a condensed form of simile in which comparison between two different objects is shown without the use of such word as –like, as or so. 
  • Personification is an attribution of personal nature, intelligence or character to inanimate objects or abstract notions.
  • Onomatopoeia is when a words sound resembles the sound which it is describing. 
  • Hyperbole is a statement made emphatic by overstatement. 
  • Oxymoron is a figure of speech which incongruous or contradictory terms appear side by side. 
  • Repetition is a figure of speech where a word or a phrase within a sentence is repeated. 
  • Irony occurs when words or ideas end up conveying a different meaning, usually one that is diametrically opposed to their original meaning. 
  • Antithesis is a figure of speech where opposite ideas are brought together in a sentence for poetic effect.
