A noun a naming word. 

It is the name of a person, place, thing or an idea. 

For example:

  • Girl
  • School
  • Box
  • Alfred
  • Doctor 

Types of Nouns 

Common nouns 

The names of persons, places or things in general are common nouns

For example:

parallel
  • Girl
  • Country
  • Month
  • School
  • Pen 

Proper nouns 

Proper nouns are the specific names of persons, places or things. 

For example:

  • Jane
  • Canada
  • April
  • Zion School
  • Parker 

Concrete nouns 

Concrete nouns are people and things which exist physically and can be seen, heard, smelled, touched or tasted. 

For example:

  • Doctor
  • Tree
  • House
  • Car
  • Rain 

Abstract nouns 

The things that do not exist physically are called abstract nouns. They cannot be seen or touched. They are ideas, qualities and conditions.

Collective nouns 

Group of people or things are called collective nouns. 

For example:

  • A Bouquet of Flowers
  • A Group of Friends 

Countable and uncountable nouns 

Countable nouns are those nouns which can be counted. They have singular and plural. 

One – Singular – Apple 

Many – Plural – Bananas 

For example:

  • Book
  • Girl
  • Table 

Uncountable nouns are those which cannot be counted like a liquid, a gas or a concept. 

For example:

  • Milk
  • Air
  • Love
