Parts of A Compound Sentence
- The compound sentence is basically made up of two sentences joined by a comma and a connecting word such as or, but, and, etc.
- They tie together similar ideas.
- The two sentences are not dependent upon one another.
- It means that each one of them has its own subject, predicate and expresses a complete part.
- A compound sentence consists of two independent clauses.
- These are joined using:
- Conjunction with a comma
- Semicolon
- Colon
- Dash
- Conjunction with
Now, let’s see where do we use and, but, or ?
- We use ‘And’ to join similar sentences or ideas.
- We use ‘But’ to join opposite ideas.
- We use ‘Or’ to show choices.
Let’s look at some examples:
1. Compound sentence using ‘AND’
Emma went shopping.
She bought a beautiful dress.
Answer:
Emma went shopping and she bought a beautiful dress.
2. Compound sentence using ‘BUT’
I like swimming.
My brother hates swimming.
Answer:
I like swimming but my brother hates swimming.
3. Compound sentence using ‘OR’
Alen can go to the beach.
He can go to buy an ice-cream.
Answer:
Alen can go to the beach or he can go to buy an ice-cream.
Let’s look at some examples to get idea about Compound sentences:
- Although I broke my arm, I still cheered for my team.
- As Alex was arriving to work, he realized he forgot his lunch box.
- I cooked dinner, and my friend washed the dishes.
- Dr. Mary said I could come to her office on Friday, or Saturday of next week.
- They were starving and exhausted, so they went home.
- I don’t understand, but I will do more research.
- The boys sang, and the girls danced.
- My father’s job is very difficult, but he enjoys going to work everyday.
- She didn’t want to go to the dentist, yet she went anyway.
A clause is a category of words having a subject and a verb.
An independent clause can act as a sentence.
A dependent clause is used as some part of speech. It can be an adjective, adverb, or noun. It cannot self sustain as a sentence.
Phrase
A group of words utilized as a sentence part.
Phrase do not have a verb and a subject.
It can be a naming word (noun), describing word(adjective), or adverb.
They are the following phrases: prepositional
gerund, participial, and infinitive.
A compound sentence connects two or more independent clauses.
Commas bifurcate the clauses in a compound sentence. (A short sentence linked by and is sometimes connected without a comma.) A semicolon can replace the conjunction and comma. The clauses related with same subject have to be combined to make a meaningful compound sentence.
Example:
She (subject) talks (verb) and (conjunction) he (subject) listens (verb).
The conjunction should express the proper combination between the clauses.
“And” joins thoughts equal importance.
“Or” links clauses that articulates alternatives.
” Nor” joins negative ideas together.
“But” joins clauses that articulates contrasting thoughts.
Note: Do not confuse a compound sentence with a simple sentence
having compound parts. Both sides of the conjunction will have a subject and a verb in a compound sentence.
Example:
Mother S baked V a cake and C I S frosted V it.
