The simple past tense is used to present or describe an event or occurrence that has happened or existed in the past. The situations or conditions to use a simple past tense is to: 

  • Present an action, event, or condition that occurred in the past or at a given specific time. 
  • Refer to or present an action that has been completed with no time mentioned. 
  • Present or refer to an action or occurrence of an event which done repeatedly and regularly. 
  • Refer to a state of mind in the past or a feeling that was felt in the past. 
  • Refer to somebody who has died. 
  • Describe events that have occurred in rapid succession in the past. 

There are four past tense forms in English: 

  • Past simple: I walked. 
  • Past continuous: I was walking. 
  • Past perfect: I had walked. 
  • Past perfect continuous: I had been walking.
