Personal Pronouns
- It is a pronoun that is used to replace a person, place or thing. They are as follows:
- (I, you, he, she, it, we, they, me, him, her, us, and them)
- There are three personal pronouns that we use for objects/ things: they, them, it.
Their Uses:
They avoid repetition of same word.
If the noun is singular, then the pronoun is singular.
- Jill got a new pet. (singular noun)
- She got a new pet (singular noun)
If the noun is plural, then the pronoun is plural.
- The children love the playground (singular noun)
- They love the playground (plural pronoun)
Relative Pronouns
A relative pronoun connects a clause or phrase to a noun or pronoun. This clause describes the nouns.
Relative pronouns are as follows: who, whose, whom, which, and that. When and where are also used as relative pronouns.
Relative pronouns (in bold) are placed directly after the noun or pronoun they modify.
The subject (nouns/pronouns)(in italics) of the sentence is described by a relative/adjective clause. (underlined) These clauses describe the noun or pronoun. So, they are also called adjective clauses.
- The children whom we love dearly need better health plans.
- The cop who saved the girl was very brave.
- Remember the day when we met for the first time?
- The painting which has such a rich history, is now for sale.
- Never lie to a lawyer whose job is to help you.
- This is the movie that everyone is excited about.
- I have a cousin whose dog is adorable.
- I remember a time when I could buy candy for 10 cents.
- I want to visit the hospital where my cousin was getting treated.
