Prefixes and Suffixes
Verbs denote a physical or mental action or state of being.
We can form new verbs by adding prefixes or suffixes to the words which we already know. Prefixes and suffixes are a group of letters that are added in a word to change its meaning. Prefixes and suffixes cannot stand on their own in a sentence.
Prefixes
Prefixes are added to the beginning of an existing word to create a new word with a different meaning.
For example: rewrite
Here, “re-” is the prefix added to “write” to form the verb “rewrite”.
Suffixes
Suffixes are added to the end of an existing word. Verb suffixes are added at the end of a word to convert it into a verb. These are usually made by adding letters to a noun or an adjective.
For example: Real + -ize = Realize
A suffix often changes a word from one class to another.
A noun or adjective can change into a verb or adverb after adding suffixes.
In the example given above “real” is an adjective and “–ize” is a suffix. The word formed is “realize” which is a verb.
