Most commonly used rhetorical devices:
- Direct Address: When the audience is directly addressed using the second person pronouns, “you” and “your”.
- Rule of Three: Where three things are connected or something is repeated thrice in order to emphasize them and ensure they are memorable.
- Emotive Language: When specific kind of language is used with the intent of producing an emotional reaction.
- Imperative Verbs: Verbs that give an instruction or command.
- Repetition: Saying the same thing multiple times to highlight its importance.
- Rhetorical Questions: Questions that are asked to make a point rather than to get an answer.
To identify the rhetorical strategies, we need to first answer the following questions about the text:
- Who is the speaker/writer?
- Who is/are the audience?
- What is the speaker/writer’s purpose and intention?
- How does the speaker/writer achieve this through language use?
