Shades of Meaning:

Shades of meaning are used to describe the small, subtle differences in meaning between similar words or phrases

The word happy can be expressed using words like:

  • Excited
  • Overjoyed
  • Ecstatic

Example:

1. Lady and Women

Even though both refer to an adult female, a lady suggests one who is well mannered and refined or proper.

Shades

Read the two sentences and understand the difference between them:

  • Ben walked quietly down the hallway.
  • Ben walked slowly down the hallway.

Even though both the sentences tell you that Ben isn’t making much noise as he walks through the hallway, there is a difference.

The first sentence suggests that he is walking without talking or making any noise and the second sentence suggests he is walking carefully placing each foot in front of the other not making noise.

parallel
  • She was annoyed with her little brother.
  • She was angry with her little brother.

Even though both the sentences tell that she is not happy with her brother, there is a difference.

The first sentence suggests she is being bothered by her brother and the second sentence suggests that she is mad at her brother.
