Statements
- A statement or declarative sentence is the most common type of sentence.
- A statement is used to express a fact, an opinion or an idea.
- Our likes and dislikes, information about things, people and events are called facts.
- When we plan something to do, it is an idea.
- How we feel about things, our beliefs, etc. are opinions.
There are three other types of sentences: questions, exclamations and commands. Some ways to identify a statement are:
- They do not ask questions.
- They do not make requests.
- They do not give commands.
- They are also not used to express shock or any kind of surprise /excitement.
Two Types of Statements: Simple and Compound Statements
- A simple sentence contains a subject and a verb.
- It expresses a single complete thought that can stand on its own.
Simple Sentences to Compound Sentences
Simple
- Goldilocks ate the porridge.
- The bears found her in their house.
Compound
- Goldilocks ate the porridge and the bears found her in their house.
Simple
- Some children went to the park.
- Some children didn’t go to the zoo.
Compound
- Some children went to the park, but others didn’t go to the zoo.
Simple
- Some children went to the park.
- Some children went to the zoo.
Compound
- Some children went to the park and others went to the zoo.
