Conjunctions are utilized to express relationships between things in a sentence, link different clauses together, and to combine sentences. 

 Types of Conjunctions 

  • Coordinating conjunctions 
  • Correlative conjunctions 
  • Subordinating conjunctions 
  • Conjunctive adverbs 

Coordinating conjunctions are utilized to join two or more words, phrases, or independent clauses. 

The coordinating conjunctions are:

  • and, but, or, yet, for, nor, so 

Correlative conjunctions, or paired conjunctions, are sets of conjunctions that are always used together. 

The correlative conjunctions come in pairs. They are:

parallel
  • both…and, just as…so, not only…but, also, either…or, neither…nor, whether…or

Subordinating conjunctions are utilized to create complex sentences containing one independent clause, or main clause, and one dependent, or subordinate clause. 

The subordinating conjunctions are:

  • after, although, as, as if, because, before, if, in order that, once, since, so that, than, though, unless, until, when, where, while. 

Conjunctive adverbs combine two independent clauses. 

These can be two separate sentences, or can be combined into a single complex sentence with a semicolon. 

The conjunctive adverbs are:  

parallel
  • Also, anyway ,besides ,certainly, finally, furthermore,  
  • However, incidentally, indeed, instead, likewise, meanwhile,  
  • Moreover, namely, nevertheless, next, now, otherwise,  
  • Similarly, still, then, therefore, thus, undoubtedly.
