Sentences are of four types based on their Form and Function. 

  • Declarative: When a speaker states or declares something, it is called a Declarative Sentence. (Statement) 
  • Interrogative: When a speaker asks a question, it is called an Interrogative Sentence. (Question) 
  • Imperative: When a speaker tells someone to do something, it is called an Imperative Sentence. (Command/Order/Request)  
  • Exclamatory: When a speaker expresses a strong feeling, it is called an Exclamatory Sentence. (Exclamation) 

Each type of sentence has a purpose and a specific word order. 

A sentence may end with a period (.), question mark (?) or an exclamation point (!) depending on its purpose.
