Types of Variety of Expression

Idiom

A group of words whose meanings are not clear or understandable from the individual words. Example: ‘raining cats and dogs’ – this idiom means that it’s raining heavily

Slang

These are informal words or phrases more commonly spoken in English. These words or phrases are typically used in a group or society. New slang expressions are made every day. Hence it is hard to find slang in the dictionary—for example: ‘hood’ – slang for the neighborhood.

Phrasal Verbs

Phrasal verbs are verbs that have a figurative meaning, just like idioms, and also literal meaning. A phrasal verb is always made with a verb and either an adverb or preposition. Example: Look after – Can you look after my cat while I’m on holiday?

Proverbs

Are short meaningful sentences commonly known by the public and repeated as a piece of advice or suggestion. A proverb usually expresses the common truth. Example: Time is money (proverb)

Cliché

Are words or phrases that have become commonly used that are considered overused and are not that interesting? It can also be used to describe what is outdated or unoriginal. Example: All that glitters is not gold.
