Friction is one of the most important concepts of friction, and today we will learn what friction is and everything there is to know about it.

What Is Friction?

According to Britannica, Friction is the force that stops one solid item from sliding or rolling over another. Frictional forces, like the traction needed to walk without slipping, can be helpful, but they also make it very hard to move. About 20% of the power of a car’s engine is used to overcome friction in the moving parts.

Adhesion, which is the force of attraction between the contact areas of the surfaces, which are always microscopically uneven, is the main reason why metals experience friction. When you shear these “welded” joints, and when the imperfections of the harder surface plow across the softer surface, friction happens.

Introduction to Friction in Daily Life

Friction force opposes or resists the relative motion between the two surfaces of objects in contact. It always acts in the direction opposite to that of the applied force or in the direction opposite to which an object moves or tries to move. It is a contact force. There are a few advantages and a few disadvantages of friction in daily life. In this session, we are going to list and explain each one of them.

Advantages of friction: 

Friction can be increased by increasing the roughness of the surfaces in contact. This will increase the irregularities between the surfaces. It plays a very important role in our daily life. Without friction we are a handicap. 

 There are many advantages of friction. A few of them are: 

  1. Fixing the nail in the wood or wall.

Disadvantages of friction: 

Friction can be decreased by reducing the roughness of the surface in contact. This will decrease the irregularities between the surface but still, it cannot be made zero. Even though friction is very important in our daily life, it also has a few disadvantages. 

 There are many disadvantages of friction. A few of them are:

  • The vehicles have treaded tires to help them grip the road better.
  • Football shoes include studs or grooves on the bottom to help them stay on the ground.
  • Kabaddi player rubbing hands on sand to get a firmer grasp on the other person
  • When you hit the brakes on a car, the breaking pads are harsh, which makes it hard to stop the car.
  • To get a stronger grip, gymnasts put some rough stuff on their hands.

Ways to Reduce Friction

  • Using things like powder, oil, and grease as lubricants
  • To make it easier to slide, we spread the powder over a carrom board.
  • To reduce friction, oil or grease is put between moving elements of machines.
  • Rollers are included in travel bags to make them easier to move.
  • Wheels on cars and trucks help reduce friction.
  • Using ball bearings. Ball bearings, for instance, are used in ceiling fans, bicycles, and cars to cut down on friction.
  • A streamlined body helps lower friction.
  • Polishing the surface to smooth out the bumps.
