What is Motion?

We see a lot of objects around us in our daily lives in various places such as our house, the playground, the jungle, the garden, and the school. Among those objects, some seem to be fixed at particular places and others are not. The moving objects move in many different ways. Some move fast and some slow. Objects can also be moving in different kinds of paths. We shall categorize the motions done by objects into various categories in this session.

Objects in Motion

The pictures above show the crawling ants, the cycling people, the swimming ducks, the running people, and the water falling in Niagara Falls. All the pictures show objects that are moving. The position of all these objects changes with time. Therefore, they are said to be in motion. Thus, an object is said to be in motion if its position changes with time.

Types of Motion:

Motions can be categorized into many different types based on the pattern or the type of path the moving objects take. These are as follows:

1. Linear motion:

Linear motion is motion in a straight line.

When an object moves from one place to another in a straight path, it shows linear motion.

parallel

Examples:

  • A car moving on a straight road
  • A child walking straight to school
  • A ball rolling on the floor in a straight line

This is one of the easiest types of motion to understand. The path is straight. The movement is simple.

2. Circular motion:

Circular Motion happens when an object moves in a circle.

Examples:

  • The hands of a clock
  • A merry-go-round in a park

The object keeps moving around a centre point.

3. Rotatory motion:

Rotational motion happens when an object turns around its own centre.
Examples:
A ceiling fan
A spinning top
The object stays in one place but keeps turning.

4.Oscillatory Motion

Oscillatory motion is a back-and-forth motion.

Examples:

  • A swing moving forward and backward
  • A pendulum of a clock

This motion happens again and again around the same place.

5. Periodic motion:

A motion is said to be periodic if it repeats itself after fixed time intervals.

6. Random motion:

A motion is said to be random if there is no specific pattern of motion.

Questions and Answers:

  1. Identify the type of motions that you see in the picture below.
Spinning of Earth

Spinning of Earth

Answer:

The spinning of the Earth about its axis is rotatory and periodic at the same time.

It is periodic as it rotates again and again after equal amounts of time.

Types of Motion with Examples

Let us understand types of motion with examples from daily life:

  • Linear motion: A bus moving on a straight road
  • Circular motion: The wheel of a bicycle
  • Rotational motion: A fan rotating on the ceiling
  • Oscillatory motion: A swing in the playground
  • Periodic motion: Day and night repeating
  • Random motion: A flying butterfly

These examples help children understand ‘what is motion’ easily.

This types of motion chart makes learning fun and easy.

Conclusion

Motion can be of the following types:

  1. Linear motion: Motion in a straight line.
  2. Circular motion: Motion in a circular path.
  3. Rotatory motion: Motion about an axis.
  4. Periodic motion: Motion that repeats itself after a certain time.
  5. Random motion: Motion that has no specific pattern.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is motion in physics?

Motion means moving from one place to another. When something changes its place, it is in motion.

How do we define motion?

We define motion as the change in position of an object with time. If an object moves, it shows motion.

What are the different types of motion?

The main types of motion are:
Linear motion
Circular motion
Rotational motion
Oscillatory motion
Periodic motion
Random motion

What is linear motion with examples?

Linear motion is motion in a straight line.
Examples:
A car moving on a straight road
A child walking straight

What is circular motion?

Circular motion is motion in a circle, like the hands of a clock

What is rotational motion?

Rotational motion is when an object turns around its own centre, like a ceiling fan.

What is oscillatory motion?

Oscillatory motion is a back-and-forth motion. The best example is of a swing moving forward and backwards.

What is periodic motion?

Periodic motion is motion that repeats again and again, like day and night.
