Effects of Heat
Key Concepts
- Raise in temperature
- Increase in the volume
- Change in state
- Brings chemical action
- Changes physical properties
Introduction
Scales of temperature:
Temperature can be measured on three scales:
- Celsius scale
- Fahrenheit scale
- Kelvin scale

Explanation
Heat and its effects
Heat has very different effects. We will learn some of them in this session.
Increases the temperature
As the heat increases, the temperature also increases.
Let us consider a vessel filled with water. Keep a thermometer, and observe the temperature. Now, start heating the vessel. You’ll observe that the reading in the thermometer gradually increases. Hence, we can say that with the increase in heat, the temperature also increases.
Increases the volume
With the increase of the heat, the volume of the particular object also increases; in solids, liquids and gases, the volume of the substances increases.
Example:
There is a gap between the rail line track because the rail logs increase their volume in the summer season due to the heat in the environment.
Changes the state of matter:
With the increase in the heat, the changes in the states of the matter are observed, such as:
- Solids will turn into liquids if the solids are constantly heated.
- Liquids will turn into gases if the liquids are constantly heated.
Example:
Consider a vessel filled with ice cubes. Now, heat the vessel constantly. You can observe that the ice cubs are turned into water. Hence the solids turned into liquids.
Heat the vessel constantly, then observe that the water is slowly converted into water vapor. Hence liquids are converted into gases.
- Brings about chemical change:
The increase in the heat increases the rate of reaction, and it conducts a chemical reaction.
Let us consider a beaker filled with water and add some tea powder to it. We can see that the tea powder is thoroughly mixed with the water. Now, heat the beaker, then we can see that the tea powder is mixed thoroughly. Hence, we can say heat bring a chemical change.
- Brings about physical change:
An increase in the heat changes the physical state of the body
Let us consider a blacksmith making a knife to make the knife out of the raw iron. The blacksmith heats the iron and then applies pressure on it to get the desired shape. If the blacksmith doesn’t heat the iron and applies pressure, he can never get the desired shape. Hence, we can say that heat brings physical change.
Summary
Heat and its effects
Heat has the following effects:
- Increases the temperature:
As the heat increases, the temperature also increases.
- Increases the volume:
With the increase of heat, the volume of a particular object also increases. In solids, liquids and gases, the volume of the substances increases.
- Brings about chemical change:
The increase in heat increases the rate of reaction, and a chemical reaction occurs.
- Brings about physical change:
An increase in heat changes the physical state of the body.
