What is Weight?  

Weight is the measure of how heavy an object is. … The weight of an object is the amount of material it contains.

Ounces

Ounces is the smallest unit of weight. 

The abbreviation for ounces is ‘oz’ 

1 ounce weight is same like a slice of a cheese, butter or a quart.

When we have so many ounces we move to this unit. 

16 ounces is equal to 1 pound

The abbreviation for pound is ‘lb’

1 Ton is also equal to 32000 ounces.

Conversion between the Units of Weight 

To Convert larger unit to smaller unit we multiply

Observe the image carefully and try to solve the questions based on conversion between the units of weight. 

Conversion between the Units of Weight 

1. 8 lb.  = _____ oz. 

Solution:          

1 lb. = 16 oz 

So, 8 lb. = 8 × 16 = 128 oz 

2. 12 ½ lb. = _____oz. 

Solution:                  

1 lb. = 16 oz 

So, 12 ½ lb. = 12 ½ × 16 oz = 200 oz 

3. 64 oz = _____lb. 

Solution:   

1 lb. = 16 oz, So 1 oz = 1/16 lb. 

Now, 64 oz = 1 ÷ 16 × 64 

= 4 lb. 

Real life applications based on units on Weight (Word Problems) 

Example: Mrs. Mary handed out 4 ounces of peanuts to each of her 20 students. How many pounds of peanuts did Mrs. Mary hand out? 

Solution: Peanuts of almonds handed out to 1 student is 4 ounces. 

Total no. of ounces of peanuts handed out for 20 students is  

= 4 × 20 

=  80 ounces  

Convert ounces into pounds. 

=  80 ÷ 16 pounds 

= 5 pounds 

So, Mrs. Mary handed out 5 pounds of peanuts
